SOLEDAD – A deputy shot someone allegedly armed with a weapon in Soledad Tuesday morning.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle driving through a residential area along the 32000-block of McCoy Road in Soledad. Loud music was reportedly coming from the car and deputies were advised that the driver might have a firearm, according to a press release.

The first deputy who arrived found the car and encountered the driver. No details were given on what happened during the encounter, only that the driver was allegedly armed and the deputy discharged his weapon and shot the driver.

The deputy was not injured during the incident. The driver was given first-aid and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“Any time force is used, it is a serious matter. Our focus remains on the safety of the community, the individuals involved, and our deputies. This incident is now under independent review by the District Attorney’s Office,” said Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto in a statement. “We will continue to cooperate fully while respecting the integrity of the investigation.”

It is unclear if the driver was arrested for a crime.

Video evidence related to the incident was given to the District Attorney’s Office as part of the ongoing investigation.

Because the investigation is ongoing, no additional details are currently available.
