The County of Monterey is tightening security measures for meetings of the Board of Supervisors at the County Government Center, starting with Tuesday’s session.

In a press release Monday afternoon, the county said security staff would be screening members of the public with bag checks and handheld metal detectors at the entrance of the Board Chambers.

The County plans to use these measures in the interim, the release said, while it works toward implementing long-term security improvements, including a permanent metal detector system at the Government Center.

According to a statement from the County, “The screenings are being implemented to enhance safety for visitors, employees and County operations … the County is committed to improving safety and will monitor the process closely.”

Community members planning to attend meetings at the Government Center are encouraged to plan in extra time for entry into Board Chambers.

The Monterey County Government Center is located at 168 W. Alisal Street in Salinas. To find a calendar of upcoming meetings, visit https://monterey.legistar.com/calendar.aspx
