Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Salinas man on Monday after he attempted to flee on foot and threw a dog at a deputy during the arrest.
Around 5:30 p.m., deputies contacted an adult male near the intersection of Pingree Way and Penzance Street, just outside the Salinas city limits. Deputies identified the man as 38-year-old Orlando Figueroa-Martinez, who had an active no-bail arrest warrant.

According to the sheriff’s office, Figueroa-Martinez denied his identity and provided false information during the contact. He was holding a small dog at the time. When deputies attempted to arrest him, he ignored commands and fled on foot. During the pursuit, he threw the dog at a deputy and continued to resist arrest.
Deputies pursued Figueroa-Martinez, and led to a physical struggle as he continued to attempt to flee and refused to comply with commands. He was taken into custody.
During a search incident to arrest, deputies found Figueroa-Martinez in possession of a loaded and concealed firearm, approximately 68.53 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a dirk or dagger. The dog ran from the scene during the incident. Deputies said they attempted to locate the animal but were unsuccessful.
The owners of the 6-month old puppy said the dog never returned home and the Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in keeping an eye on him. He is a miniature Doberman Pinscher puppy, who was last seen wearing a black service dog vest near the intersection of Pingree Way and Penzance Street.
Figueroa-Martinez was booked into the Monterey County Jail on charges including felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a dirk or dagger, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, providing false identification to a peace officer, animal cruelty, possession of a loaded firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.
