CARMEL VALLEY – The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating after discovering human remains in a rural area of Carmel Valley.

Deputies were dispatched to a rural part of Cachagua Road around 6:45 p.m. on Jan. 29, after people walking in the area found what appeared to be a human skull, along with other remains. A press release states that deputies confirmed the discovery, then secured the scene and turned it over to the coroner division.

The scene was processed over the course of multiple days, where additional human remains were collected. The Sheriff’s Office plans to conduct a forensic examination to help identify the remains. The forensic process will include DNA analysis and comparison with missing and unidentified persons records through the state’s Department of Justice.

Human remains had also been discovered on Dec. 29 of last year, in the area of Viejo Road. A land surveyor reported finding a human skull during that incident and additional remains were located and collected by the Monterey County Coroner’s Office.

Identification of the remains found in December is still pending DNA analysis.

Both investigations are ongoing, with no further details currently available.
