MONTEREY – A community meeting is scheduled next week to discuss Monterey’s study of the traffic signal at Prescott Avenue and Taylor Street.

The city will host the Prescott Traffic Signal Study community outreach meeting on March 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hilltop Park Center, 871 Jessie Street.

Monterey is studying the signal as part of an upcoming Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility improvement project at the intersection. According to the city there have been changes in traffic patterns since the signal was installed and staff are reviewing whether the signal is still needed.

Back in September, the signal was placed into a flashing operation mode to simulate an all-way stop. Monterey Public Works’ engineering division says the plan is to keep the signal in flashing red operation for at least the next 90-days while they collect traffic data and operations. The city is also requesting feedback from residents during this time.

A recent traffic analysis found current traffic patterns may no longer warrant a signal. Monterey reported traffic volumes have decreased since the Presidio of Monterey closed to public access in 2001. When the base was open, drivers used Taylor Street to reach downtown, and the signal helped meter traffic entering and leaving the base.

At the March 5 meeting, staff will present study results, possible project alternatives and ask for community feedback. A final study summary will be presented to the Monterey city council before any final decisions are made about the intersection.
