MONTEREY – The leisure and fun of roller skating could return to the Monterey Peninsula full time as the team of a popular pop-up location search for a permanent home.

Monterey Skates organizers are eyeing Del Monte Shopping Center to set up their new home. The rink will be set up next to Gold’s Gym in the Shopping Center. The space used to be a Mervyns that closed in 2009. Organizers hope to operate seven days a week, expand concessions and rentals and build upon the traditions started at the pop-up, bringing back a family-friendly space that has grown in demand and popularity since pandemic closures.

Monterey Skates has been operating out of the Monterey Fairgrounds a couple weekends each month since last year. The team has been posting updates on their website where you can buy tickets for all night skates, adult skating nights, lessons and themed events.

This week the team said they would host a final two weekend skating sessions in March, including March 6-8 and March 27-28.

The owners, Max Troyer and Morgan Goyette, who are members of the Monterey Bay Roller Derby, are working with building departments to get everything permitted.

The next steps will be approval from the city.

The Monterey Peninsula hasn’t had a full-time operating roller skating rink in several years ever since Water City in Marina closed in 2020 and Del Monte Gardens in Monterey closed in 2011.
