PACIFIC GROVE – The Pacific Grove Police Department is investigating a suspicious contact that involved a student at Pacific Grove High School around 8:10 a.m. Friday.
According to a press release from the police department, the incident occurred while the student was walking to school, in the area of the 1100 block of Buena Vista Avenue. An adult male driver approached the student and complimented her on her outfit, then asked if she wanted a ride.
The student declined his offer for a ride and continued safely to school, however, she seemed to be followed as she reported seeing the driver two or three more times while walking. She reported the incident to school officials, who notified the Pacific Grove Police Department.
Pacific Grove police officers are investigating and working with the student and her family. Officers performed a check of the area and surrounding area. Officers are also conducting interviews and checking available surveillance video sources in the surrounding area.
The responsible individual was described as an Asian adult male in his 40s, according to the press release. The vehicle involved was initially described to be a white sedan, but through interviews, a more accurate description may be a smaller white SUV or crossover vehicle.
Police say they will be conducting increased patrols and implementing saturation patrols in and around school campuses during drop-off and pickup hours.
The investigation is ongoing and is being handled by the Pacific Grove Police Department.
The police department is asking for the community’s assistance with the investigation. They encourage anyone who may have witnessed the incident, observed a vehicle matching the description in the area between 8 and 8:30 a.m. or may have relevant video footage – such as residential doorbell or security cameras – to contact the department at (831) 648-7200. The Pacific Grove Police Department is also encouraging families to speak with their children about personal safety, including the following safety tips: walking in groups whenever possible, maintaining awareness of surroundings, avoiding engagement with unknown individuals, reporting suspicious or concerning behavior immediately.
