Mary Ann Torrente OBITUARY

Mary Ann Torrente OBITUARY

A lifelong resident of Monterey, Mary Ann Torrente was the daughter of the late Joseph and Carmella Abbati. Mary Ann passed away at age 93, in the comfort of her home, peacefully and surrounded by family who loved and adored her.

Mary Ann was the devoted wife of her high school sweetheart, Peter. They were married on June 10, 1951, at San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey and shared a lifetime of love – a bond that remained unbroken even after his passing in 2021. Together they traveled, created a home filled with warmth, loyalty, and deep affection, and built a family that was the center of their world. Their happiest moments were the times when everyone gathered to celebrate Nano and Nana’s birthdays, and most especially the joy and togetherness of Christmas, and Mom’s delicious cioppino.

She was the beloved mother of Gerry (Peter) Guerra of Monterey; Mario (Amy) Torrente of Monterey; and Carmella (Bruce) Blackmon of Monterey.

She was the adored and treasured grandmother of her precious grandchildren, whose lives were brightened by her love and gentle, but strong spirit, Antoinette (Forest) Weber, Maryann (Andy) Kapsalis, Johnny (Rachel) Guerra, Peter Torrente, Nicholas (Aurelia) Torrente, Mario Torrente, Alicia (George) Sabilino, Matthew Blackmon, Michael Blackmon, Ashley Blackmon and her fiancé Michael Thayer. Her legacy continues through her 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each one a source of joy and pride to her. She is also survived by her sister, Lucille Birtola of San Jose.

Our Mother and Nana was the heart of our family – our building strength and our constant source of love. She will forever be remembered with deep admiration, respect, and endless affection. She will live on in our hearts forever. Our greatest comfort now is knowing she is reunited with Dad once more.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to her in-home hospice caregivers, whose gentle, attentive, and deeply compassionate presence became an extension of our family, bringing comfort and peace to our mother in her final days. Also, thanks to Dr. Michael Plaines and Dr. Nancy Rubin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary Ann’s memory to Hospice of the Central Coast.

In keeping with Mary Ann’s wishes, services will be private, with a Mass and burial held for immediate family. This intimate farewell reflects the quiet dignity our mother valued throughout her life. Our family sincerely appreciates the many expressions of sympathy and support.
