The benefits of exercise range from strengthening your body to helping you live longer. While many of us slow down and gradually diminish our physical activity as we age, the older we get, the more important it is to stay active.

Additionally, strength training for runners, bodybuilders and other athletes increases endurance and overall performance.

What is functional strength training?

Unless you’re a hardcore fitness enthusiast, you probably never realized that there are two distinct types of fitness paths. One builds aesthetic muscle, while the other builds functional muscle.

Pursuing aesthetic fitness sculpts your body into an ideal, making you look well-proportioned with an impressive physique. However, this type of training is not beneficial for your range of motion, flexibility or speed. In short, you might look great, but you might not be able to perform simple tasks, such as scratching your own back.

“These exercises require you to engage your core muscles, which include your pelvic floor muscles,” NeSmith said. “Your core muscles surround your spine, and they stabilize your spine during any daily movement pattern. When you strengthen your core muscles, you are going to increase your balance and reduce your fall risk.”

Additionally, the Mayo Clinic states, “As you add more functional exercises to your workouts, you should see improvements in your ability to perform your everyday activities.”

Simple strength training for beginners to strengthen your core and increase balance

Functional fitness is not going to the gym and seeing how much you can bench press. These exercises have a different purpose.

“Maybe you have a 65-year-old man or woman and their balance is going downhill,” NeSmith said. “You can have them just stand on their right foot, while their left foot is slightly off the ground, and do a simple exercise like dumbbell bicep curls. The dumbbell bicep curls work their upper body, but at the same time, they are improving their balance.”

NeSmith listed a few other strength training workouts he uses for building muscle in your core and enhancing balance. You can do all of these beginner strength training exercises at home with the right gear. Whether you’re working with a trainer on a personalized strength training program or developing one yourself, these are the exercises to focus on:

• Front step-up: While holding dumbbells in your hands, keep one foot on a step platform and lift the other foot off the floor, raising the knee up to waist height before setting it back down.
• TRX single-leg squat: With one foot behind you in a suspended total resistance exercise loop for support, perform single-leg body-weight squats.
• Single-leg squat with step platform: With one foot supported on a step platform and dumbbells in hand, perform single-leg squats.
• Lateral step overs: Using a step platform, move from left to right and back again, stepping side to side on and over the platform.
• Single-arm dumbbell chest press on a balance ball: Lying with your shoulders on a balance ball and your feet out in front of you so you create an elevated bridge position, use a dumbbell to execute single-arm chest presses.
• Single-leg Romanian deadlift: Holding a kettlebell in one hand, lower it to just above the floor while raising the same leg straight back until it is horizontal to the floor. Slowly move back to the starting position.
• Medicine ball walking lunge: Perform a walking lunge while holding a medicine ball with two hands. Start with the medicine ball at your chest. Lower it so when your back knee is down, the medicine ball is in front of your forward shin. As your feet come together, raise the medicine ball directly overhead.
• Balance ball stirring the pot: Assume an inclined prone position with your elbows on a stability ball and feet spread to about shoulder width. First, rotate your elbows in a clockwise position for six circles. Then, rotate them counterclockwise for six circles.

There are plenty of ways to go fishing. It is one of the oldest methods of bringing a meal ashore, from standing on the shore with a 10-foot rod to wading in calm waters while whipping a fly fishing rod back and forth.

But one type of fishing has become more popular over the last few years: magnet fishing. However, there is a big difference between catching fish and magnet fishing. There is only one rule: If you manage to hook and reel in a scaled aquatic creature, you’re doing it wrong.

What to know before you go magnet fishing

The basics

While you still have a fishing line, no hooks or bait are on it. In fact, you don’t even use a fishing rod. Magnet fishing is the term for searching ponds, lakes and rivers for metallic objects with a powerful magnet attached to a durable rope.

You can either stand on the shore and fling the magnet as far as possible or take to the water on a small boat and trawl the magnet until it attaches to an object. Once it snags something, you must pull the rope to retrieve what’s attached to the magnet.

Equipment you’ll need

The two most important pieces of magnet fishing are the long, high-strength nylon rope and the magnet. But this isn’t the type of magnet you use to stick photos on your fridge. It is industrial-strength, made from several protective layers and can lift a few hundred pounds. There are different varieties of fishing magnets, and the size and strength depend on what you are hoping to find.

The rope is similar to rock climbing rope, as it has a high weight limit that would exceed anything you could find in a lake. The length of the rope isn’t crucial, but it does have to reach the bottom of the water. This is less important when magnet fishing from the shore, as the magnet will always sink to the bottom, but the length is vital when fishing from a boat.

Big finds

Plenty of videos online show all kinds of objects that lucky fishers pulled out. Especially popular around battlegrounds or areas of historical value, some treasure hunters have retrieved World War II weapons, ancient coins, medals and other valuable items.

But magnet fishing comes with a few risks, too. Not only are the magnets powerful enough to crush your fingers, you might bring something to the surface that can be deadly. This happens regularly in areas that saw heavy WWII fighting, as German magnet fishers regularly bring up live grenades, loaded weapons and rounds of ammunition.

Most common finds

Before you get into magnet fishing, remember that you’re not going to get filthy rich on your first try — or ever. It takes a lot of dedication and knowing where to hunt, and you might never find anything valuable.

For all the fantastic objects, there are thousands of mundane pickups. The most common objects retrieved from water include nuts and bolts, screws and nails, cutlery and tools. Occasionally, you might find scrap pipes or modern coins if the magnetic content is high enough.

In an ironic twist, the chances are good that you bring in discarded fishing tackle, such as hooks and lures.

Lattes have been around since the 17th century. European variations of the traditional caffe latte, such as the Dutch milchkaffee, the French cafe au lait, the Spanish cafe con leche or the Portuguese galao, are customarily served as part of breakfast at home.

In Italy, the caffe latte is a breakfast-only drink prepared at home. A stovetop moka pot is used to prepare the espresso before pouring it into a cup of hot milk. You can get the same effect at home with certain types of Keurig machines and K-cup pods.

What is a latte?

A latte, also known as a caffe latte in its native Italy, is a hot beverage made of espresso and steamed milk. What differentiates a latte from similar coffee beverages is the ratio of espresso to milk. A latte must be made with a 1-3 or 1-4 ratio of espresso to steamed or hot milk, whereas a flat white is made with a 1-1 ratio of drip coffee to hot milk.

In the U.S., lattes are often served in a glass using a single shot of espresso and steamed milk with a thin layer of foamed milk on top. Interestingly, if you asked for an American-style latte in Italy, you’d be asking for a latte macchiato. What’s more, asking for just “a latte” in Italy is the equivalent of asking for a glass of milk only. The correct way to order the beverage in Italy is with its full name: caffe latte.

Can you make a latte with Keurig?

If you have a latte K-cup pod, you can make lattes with any model.

Keurigs can brew any K-cup you put inside. You can make cappuccino, coffee, flat whites and many flavored latte drinks using just one K-cup pod.

How do latte K-cups work?

A K-cup is a pod containing the raw ingredients needed to make your beverage. When you insert a K-cup into your Keurig and hit the “Brew” button, the machine punctures holes into the top and bottom of the pod.

Pressurized water is then shot through the K-cup and dispensed through a filter to the cup waiting below the spout.

How does the K-Cafe model work?

The K-Cafe is a single-serve latte maker. To make lattes, you need an espresso K-cup pod and fresh milk. To keep things simple, insert the pod before adding the milk to the frother. Once you hit brew, espresso will pour into your waiting cup.

Following this, lift the frother from the machine and pour the hot milk into the cup over the espresso. This model also allows you to make cold lattes by frothing cold milk.

Before you get started, you will need:
