Henson, who prepped at Monterey High, averaged just under 17 points a game, while pulling down 279 rebounds, handing out 101 assists, and collecting 54 steals for Hartnell.

The only player to play in all 29 games this season for the Panthers, the sophomore dropped in 15 points in the team’s postseason road win at Redwoods.

Joining her on the first team was freshman Blcona Agushi, who averaged 10.2 points a contest, and compiled 79 assists and 52 steals.

Rounding out the first team were former Hollister standout Bailey Cotter, as well as Alana Hernandez. Head coach Steve Terry was named the conference’s co-Coach of the Year.

Normal Tulua and Aileen Gonzales were honorable mention selections for Hartnell (18-10), which is in the postseason for the fourth straight year.

Monterey Peninsula College, which brought back basketball this winter after a year’s absence, saw MJ Haro earn second-team honors, with Brooklyn Choates earning honorable mention.

Defensive Player of the Year

Corvell Simmons’ body of work was rewarded as the sophomore forward for Monterey Peninsula College’s men’s basketball team was named the Coast Conference’s South Defensive Player of the Year.

Named to the conference’s first team as well, the 6-foot-6 Simmons was second in the conference in blocked shots (40) and fourth in rebounds at 7.8.

Simmons was also second in the conference in scoring at 15.5, shooting just under 56 percent from the field. He led the Lobos in four different categories.

Teammate Julian Johnson Rodriguez was a second-team selection, finishing second in the conference in steals with 65. The former Monterey High standout also led the Lobos in assists, while averaging 8.8 points a game.

Tobias Akpan was named to the conference’s all-freshman team. MPC finished the season 10-18 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

Locals in St. Mary’s lineup

The final chapter in their college softball careers is unfolding for Tori Cervantes and Victoria Castillo – both of whom have started 12 of the St. Mary’s softball team’s first 13 games this year.

Infielders when both were members of The Herald’s All-County softball team, the pair are starting in the outfield for the Gaels.

Hitting near the top of the order, Cervantes is hitting .286 with three doubles, two runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases.

The former Notre Dame of Salinas third baseman, who spent her first two years playing shortstop and third for St. Mary’s, has yet to commit an error in center field.

A second team All-West Coast Conference selection last year, Cervantes is in the top 10 all-time in five different categories for the Gaels, including ninth in runs scored with 78.

Castillo has provided some pop at the plate in the heart of the order for St. Mary’s, having homered and driven in six runs, while scoring eight runs.

An infielder at Alvarez, Castillo has become a full-time right fielder for the Gaels, where she was a second-team All-WCC selection last spring.

Trosky sizzling at San Diego State

Jabin Trosky has adjusted well to his new surroundings, hitting a team-high .424 this spring for the San Diego State baseball team.

Trosky, who spent his first three years playing for nationally-ranked Oregon State, has 14 hits in 33 at-bats, with five hits going for extra bases for the 5-3 Aztecs.

Listed as a redshirt junior, Trosky has scored eight runs, while driving in a pair. The Carmel High graduate is leading the Aztecs in hits, runs scored, doubles, and total bases.

Trosky has been nearly flawless at shortstop for the Aztecs, having handled 19 of 20 chances this spring.

Trosky was a four-year starter at Carmel. He missed most of last season with an injury while at Oregon State, before entering the transfer portal and signing with San Diego State.

Synchronized sensations

DeCarlo and the Dotterer sisters took home another gold medal in the junior free trio, while Doolittle, Garvey and Eva Reichstadt won the youth free trio competition. DeSalvo grabbed silver medals in both the junior technical solo and free solo.

College men’s basketball: Otters set school record for wins https://www.montereyherald.com/2026/02/28/college-mens-basketball-otters-set-school-record-for-wins/ Sun, 01 Mar 2026 03:34:14 +0000 https://www.montereyherald.com/?p=3740384 CHICO — Avenging an earlier season setback would mean two things. Cal State Monterey Bay would establish a new single-season school record for wins with 17. But, perhaps more importantly, it would also keep their men’s basketball season alive.

Mission accomplished as the Otters went on the road Saturday to close the California Collegiate Athletic Association season with  70-54 win at Chico State.

“There was some discussion coming into the week about being the team to set the school record,” CSUMB coach Isaac Williams said. “It was important to them. I won’t have any trouble getting these kids to watch film this week.”

The Otters will be the fourth seed in the CCAA tournament and will face tournament host Cal Poly, Pomona on Thursday in a single-elimination tournament.

“I don’t think there will be a team more excited about playing basketball than ours,” Williams said. “They’re just excited to keep going and less concerned about the opponent. This group loves work and the process.”

The Otters swept the season series with Pomona, beating them 79-75 on the road, and 97-80 in their last meeting on Feb. 7 at home.

“We defended well and our ball movement was good against Pomona,” recalled Williams. “We were able to create some open shots and made them.”

With the win, the Otters established a school record for wins in Division II with 17. Last season, the core of this team managed just six wins. CSUMB will be making its first conference tournament appearance in 10 years.

The Otters came into the final day of the regular season tied with five other teams for third place at 11-10, needing a win to assure themselves of a spot.

“The best part of this whole weekend is after we lost on Thursday, we had to get up early Friday to make the trip from Humboldt to Chico,” Williams said. “Our guys were disappointed. But by the time we got on the bus, they had moved on and were dialed in.”

Humboldt clinched the No. 3 spot in the conference behind nationally ranked and unbeaten Cal State East Bay and Dominguez Hills after Thursday’s 93-82 win over CSUMB.

Holding an eight-point halftime lead on the strength of Michael Mora, the Otters extended it in the second half, opening up as much as a 19-point cushion.

“They were together and connected,” Williams said.

Mora, who finished with 16 points, led the conference in scoring this year at 17.4, edging teammate Jaden Tengan, who finished at 17 points a game.

Tengan and Joey Bilello each added 11 points for CSUMB, while Chol Deng pulled down 14 rebounds and Mezziah Oakman 11 boards and two blocks.

Clipboard: Martorella in Miami Marlins camp as non-roster player https://www.montereyherald.com/2026/02/23/clipboard-martorella-in-miami-marlins-camp-as-non-roster-player/ Mon, 23 Feb 2026 23:28:02 +0000 https://www.montereyherald.com/?p=3736060 Nathan Martorella will spend at least part of spring training with the Miami Marlins parent club after being extended an invitation as a non-roster player.

The Salinas High graduate spent last year between the Marlins Double A and Triple A teams, hitting 14 homers with 62 runs batted in over 136 games, walking 65 times.

Drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fifth round in 2022, Martorella was traded in mid-season in 2024 to the Marlins organization, where he jumped to Triple A late last season.

In four minor league seasons at four different levels, the 6-foot-1, left-handed hitting first baseman has 54 homers in 1,500 at-bats, having driven in 226 runs, while walking 212 times, with a .234 career batting average.

The Herald’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2019, Martorella was a four-time member of The Herald’s All-County baseball team, earning all-Pac 12 honors while at Cal.

While Martorella isn’t on the current Marlins 40-man roster, he was one of just five infielders invited to take part in spring training for the second straight year.

The 24-year-old, who will likely be ticketed for Triple A when the season starts, has played first base, and left and right field in the Marlins minor league system.

Monterey Bay FC acquries forward

An offense that has finished near the bottom of the league in scoring the last two years has added a critical piece to the attack, after Monterey Bay FC acquired forward Omari Glasgow on loan from Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire FC.

The 22-year-old Glasgow is the all-time leading scorer from his native country of Guyana with 21 goals at the club and international levels, having played on the Guyanese National team that competed in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Glasgow made 16 appearances last year for the Chicago Fire, producing a goal. He was also loaned to the Loudoun United, helping them to their first playoff appearance in the United Soccer League Championship.

The Union will open the regular season on March 7, hosting the Oakland Roots at Cardinale Stadium.

Glasgow took part in the Concacaf Nations League matches in 2024, where he became the first Guyanese player and the youngest to win the Concacaf Nations League Top scorer honor, collecting seven goals in five matches as a then 20-year-old.

Memorable debut

Getting an opportunity to pitch and hit as a true freshman, Monterey High grad Ella Myers’ first at-bat resulted in a run-scoring single for the UC Santa Barbara softball team.

Signed primarily to pitch for the Gauchos, the two-time Herald Female Athlete of the Year sent a 2-2 pitch into center field to drive in a run as a pitch hitter.

Myers has made eight appearances in the circle for Santa Barbara, overcoming a rough outing in her debut against nationally-ranked UCLA to cut her earned run average in half.

Owner of over 500 strikeouts at Monterey, Myers tossed eight innings during a tournament in Phoenix this past weekend, allowing just three runs, while striking out three. She has not allowed a run in her last four relief appearances.

The 18-year-old right-hander has eight strikeouts in 18.1 innings. She has not walked a hitter in her last two relief appearances for the Gauchos.

Myers is the all-time home run leader at Monterey and No. 2 in the county. She was also a state meet podium finisher in wrestling last season, winning over 100 matches.

Segura nearly flawless

Soledad High grad Eric Segura tossed three scoreless innings in his season debut against Stanford for the nationally ranked Oregon State baseball team.

The hard-throwing junior right-hander allowed two hits, while striking out four in his first outing of the season for Oregon State, which is ranked No. 11 in the nation.

Segura is 14-3 in his first two seasons for the Beavers, striking out 154 hitters in 130 innings, posting a 4.68 earned run average.

Having made 35 appearances for Oregon State, Segura has started 22 games. Opponents are hitting just .237 off of him.

Segura was the Herald’s Baseball Player of the Year in 2022.

Strong start

Former Alisal High standout Jordan Smith is one of four players at Eastern Kentucky to have started all 10 games this spring.

Smith, who was primarily used for her defense last year as a true freshman, is earning her plate appearances, hitting just under .270 with a .393 on-base percentage.

The 5-foot-8 first baseman has a pair of multiple-hit games, including her first collegiate double, having knocked in four runs and scored four runs for Eastern Kentucky, which is 4-6 overall.

Last season, Smith started 35 games for Eastern Kentucky, sporting a .958 fielding percentage. She’s already surpassed her career marks for hits and runs batted in.

Excelling in four sports at Alisal, Smith hit. 560 over four high school seasons, earning all-state honors in 2024.

Bonace Memorial Scholarship

Cal State Monterey Bay has awarded the inaugural Dr. Bobbi Bonace Memorial Scholarships to softball slugger Ellie Escalante and freshman basketball player Riley Walls.

The pair will be presented their scholarships on Thursday during halftime of the men’s basketball game against Cal State East Bay.

Escalante is a senior on the Otters softball team, while Walls is a freshman for the women’s basketball program, which is having its best season in over a decade.

“Dr. Bonace was a visionary leader whose impact is still felt throughout CSUMB and Otter Athletics today,” CSUMB Director of Athletics Kirby Garry said. “Ellie and Riley represent the values she stood for, and we are proud to honor her legacy by supporting their continued success.”

Bonace, who coached softball and basketball at UC Santa Barbara, joined CSUMB when it was founded and became the school’s first athletic director, as well as the chair of the Kinesiology department.

For more information about the Dr. Bobbi Bonace Memorial Scholarship or how to contribute, please contact Garry at kgarry@csumb.edu.

Gene Roberton Little League

A celebration of 75 years of Little League baseball at Gene Robertson Park in Salinas will unfold on Saturday, March 7.

The historic park has been the home for American Little League in Salinas for nearly eight decades. Alumni are invited to attend the festivities, which will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as the league begins another season.

College men’s basketball: Otters tie single-season school record for wins https://www.montereyherald.com/2026/02/21/college-mens-basketball-otters-tie-school-record-for-wins/ Sun, 22 Feb 2026 01:48:53 +0000 https://www.montereyherald.com/?p=3737371 SEASIDE — Less than 48 hours after suffering a gut-wrenching loss to the nation’s No. 2 ranked men’s basketball team, Cal State Monterey Bay softened the blow Saturday by tying the single-season school record for wins.

“That night, I was very worried about how we’d respond,” CSUMB coach Isaac Williams said. “How we left the locker room, people were upset. I didn’t go to sleep until 4:30 a.m. I can only imagine when they got to bed.”

The Otters quest for a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament is a little closer to reality after humbling San Francisco State 98-75 in the program’s final regular season home game at the Kelp Bed.

“On Friday, our film session was at 9:45 a.m.,” Williams said. “We didn’t leave the gym until 10 p.m. It felt like one of the most enthusiastic walk-throughs we’ve ever had. It’s a resilient group.”

The win matches the Otters single-season school record for wins as a Division II program with 16, set 17 years ago. CSUMB has two more games to break the record — both on the road at Cal State Humboldt and Chico State.

“They are fully aware of what the school record is,” said Williams, who is in his eighth season as the Otters head coach.

The Otters have been one of the better road teams in conference this year at 8-5 overall.

“We have had good focus on the road,” Williams said. “We don’t talk about outcomes, rather focus on the process. One of the reasons we’ve had success is we are not looking at the leaderboard. We have some other goals in mind.”

CSUMB fell by double-digits at home to both Humboldt and Chico State earlier this year. Humboldt sits in third place in the CCAA, while Chico State is out of the postseason picture.

Locked in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CCAA coming into Saturday’s game, CSUMB is one game in front of seventh place Cal Poly, Pomona. The top six teams in the conference advance to the tournament.

Coming within 44 seconds of stunning unbeaten Cal State East Bay last Thursday before falling 70-68, the Otters bounced back in a big way by erupting for a season high 98 points, with four players producing double digits in the scoring column.

Mezziah Oakman turned 22 minutes into 11 points and 15 rebounds, giving the 7-footer a half dozen double-doubles this year. The senior came off the bench to add four blocks and three assists.

The conference’s top two leading scorers will likely hold down those spots going into the final week of the regular season after Jaden Tengan dropped in a team-high 15 points in 18 minutes, with Michael Mora finishing with 14.

Just a sophomore, the 6-foot-6 Mora holds a slight lead over Tengan at 17.6 points a game, or two more points than his junior teammate. Joey Bilello chipped in with 11 points.

Former Carmel sharpshooter and 2025 Herald Basketball Player of the Year Warren Blut saw his first action of the season, scoring two points in seven minutes. The 6-foot-3 freshman is redshirting this season.

“I think we’re playing good basketball right now,’ Williams said. “Our defense has continued to get better. We’re doing a good job in sharing the ball. What our guys want is just to win the game.”
